Daisies and Brownies

We love our Daisies and Brownies and are very happy this year to having a meeting only for them! We’ve moved the older girls to a different day so we can focus on giving each group a fun program designed just for their age group. Our meetings are held at the school and the girls are moved from classroom to the activity room by their teachers and welcomed by the leaders. We do so many fun things; earn badges, sing songs, learn about our communities and the world, learn confidence and decision making, what it means to be a leader and a follower, and especially the importance of how to Be A Friend First. There are so many aspects of Girl Scouts. Please read more below and feel free to email Amy Savoie or myself directly if we can answer ANY questions for you.

Juniors and Cadettes

We are VERY excited about a new development in our troop this year which specifically broadens the older girls’ Girl Scout experience. We’ve decided to split the troop into two groups, Daisies and Brownies (Kindergarten-3rd grade) will meet on the first Friday of the month while our Juniors and Cadettes (4th grade-6th grade)  will meet on the 3rd Friday of the Month.

Having the older girls together for their own meeting on the 3rd Friday will allow them the opportunity to explore all the ways Girl Scouts helps provide leadership opportunities and develop service projects that result in some of the highest awards in Girl Scouting while purposefully choosing empowering projects they direct and develop.

The girls will also be encouraged to come to the 1st Friday meeting as well, though it is not mandatory. We will have a construct in place where they can use that meeting time to pursue individual or group badges, participate in STEM projects they choose, work toward their Bronze or Silver awards, or plan and participate in mentoring and leading the younger Scouts.

We hope this group will choose to participate in the MANY outside of meeting opportunities our Dallas Girl Scout council have put together this year. Please see https://www.gsnetx.org/content/dam/NE_Texas/documents/prg_E+A_fall2019.pdf for examples!

We will be working closely with these girls to help them craft what THEY want to do in Scouting this year! We are also excited for them to work on earning their Bronze and Silver awards! We’re still putting together this program and will have more information to you soon.

  4. New Girl Scouts call Monica Lopez at  972-349-2453 or email her at mlopez@gsnetx.org to set up a call to register with Troop 6504.($25.00) OR follow the instructions below in the registration section.

 


Here are the basics. You’ll find more information below:

  • Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts will meet on the 1st FRIDAY of the month.
  • Junior and Cadette Girl Scouts will meet on the 3rd FRIDAY of the month. They are encouraged but not required to come to the 1st Friday of the month meeting as well.
  • Meetings are from 3:15 – 4:30 at White Rock Montessori.
  • Our first meeting is next Friday, September 6th.
  • We would like a parent to come to the September 6th meeting from 4-4:30 if possible to discuss our program and set expectations.
  • A uniform is not necessary for the first meeting but we would like your daughter to have her uniform for the second meeting Friday, October 4th.
  • Cost is approximately $140.00 for the full year. (Registering with G.S., troop dues, uniform, patches.)
  • Your daughter MUST be registered as a Girl Scout with the Council as that provides the insurance we are required to provide WRM for each girl.

Meetings, Times, Dates & Parent Meeting

  • Our first meeting is next Friday, September 6, from 3:15-4:30.
  • Daisies and Brownies meet on the 1st Friday of the month from 3:15-4:30 PM.
  • We would like a parent to attend the first meeting from 4:00 – 4:30 so we can discuss our scouting year and answer any questions you might have. Please arrive promptly, park in the parking lot and come into the activity room. If you need to bring younger children, you are welcome to do so. If you can’t come we understand and will send information home.
  • WRM requires PROMPT pick up at 4:30. Your daughter will be brought to your car just as in regular car line. If a child is not picked up by 4:40 WRM requires the child to be entered into After School Care. We don’t have a choice about it.
  • Parents are welcome to attend meetings but are not required to. Expect that you will probably be put to work! 🙂
  • We will have several opportunities to meet outside of meeting times on the weekends. Cookie sales booths, camp outs, service opportunities, meet ups with other troops. We will provide you with the times and dates of those activities. Participation is optional.

All of the Girl Scouts stay in their classrooms until car line has finished. Girls Scouts are called to come to the lunch room over the PA system. They are met by our Leaders, line up outside and are called 1 by 1 into the room. We welcome the girls, have them put down their backpacks, put on name tags and direct them to the snack table. Daisies are the youngest members of our troop and we take special care to make sure they are welcomed and feel comfortable from the minute they enter the room.

Our meeting typically begins with snack, an explanation of our activities for the day and the badge we will be earning. We put away snack and begin activities required to earn our badges, which typically include learning skills and a craft. Some times we will have song time or free play. We close our meeting by awarding the girls the badges they earned, saying the girl scout pledge and a friendship circle. The girls will gather their belongings and line back up in the hall to be called for pickup in car line. A Leader is with them at all times.

What Kind of Girl Scout Your Daughter Will Be

Girl Scout levels correspond to the following grades:

  • Daisies: Kindergarten and First grade. Your daughter must be 5 years old to join. She may join anytime during the year when she turns 5.
  • Brownies: Second and Third grade (LE 2nd and 3rd levels)

 


Expected Costs

  • Troop Dues: $75.00 per year. This covers cover the badges your daughter will earn throughout the year and several “fun” patches for activities we do together. Dues also cover bridging ceremony costs and various expenses connected to our meetings like supplies.
  • Girl Scout Council Membership Registration: $25.00 per year. This covers many Girl Scout expenses but for us the important aspect is that it provides the troop accident insurance which we must provide proof of to WRM.
  • Uniform: Around $40.00 See information below
  • Snack: Your family can expect to provide snack for the troop 1 time a year. Usually this is shared with another family. See below for more information.
  • If your daughter or your family chooses to participate in Troop activities outside of scheduled meeting times like STEM camps, overnight camping trips, Girl Scout workshops additional costs may be required. Participation is completely voluntary!

 


Registering for Girl Scout Membership

It is important all of our girls register for Girl Scouts because WRM is requiring we have insurance for our troop and we only receive that when our Scouts are registered.

  • Membership Registration costs $25.00
  • The easiest way to register is to call Monica Lopez directly at 972-349-2453 or email her at mlopez@gsnetx.org to set up a call. You can also email Jennifer Powdrill at  jpowdrill@gsnetx.org Either one will be more than happy to walk you through the process over the phone.

Fastest way for Returning Girl Scouts from a different troop: If you are a returning Girl Scout that was registered last year the simplest way to pay and update your information is to click  https://www.gsnetx.org/ Then click MY GS on the Nav Bar, then click member profile.That brings up an email and password screen. It has a forgot password feature. Log in and click on the dropdown box that says CURRENT YEAR and chose NEXT YEAR which then makes the choice to renew appear. Click the green continue button. Accept the Girl Scout law and you will get to the payment page.

Fastest way for New Girl Scouts: Click https://girlscouts.secure.force.com/girl and fill out the form. Click continue. You come to  a page that wants to help you choose your troop. Ignore the questions and just click the green Search button. A choice will appear below that says Unsure with a tiny check box to the left of it. Check the check box and click Next. A pop up box will ask you why you’re unsure – just type our troop number in 6504. Hit enter. You will have an information page. Fill it out, click submit and it will take you to the payment page.

 


Girl Scout Uniform Basics

The only required purchases for New Girl Scouts or Girl Scouts that are moving to another level this year are: (close estimate of costs $41.00)

  • Vest $18.50 or tunic $16.50
  • American Flag patch $2.50
  • Insignia Tag $3.00
  • Word Trefoil pin $2.50
  • Membership pin $2.00
  • Troop Numerals (6504) $1.75 x 4 = $7.00
  • Council Identification set (Our council is North East Texas) $5.50
  • Patches are SUPPOSED to be iron on. We have found that doesn’t work well and strongly suggest if you do iron them on, you should tack them with thread as well. My suggestion is to have someone sew them on for you. (See Below) If you do want to try to iron on, the Girl Scouts offer an iron on kit. I HAVE NOT USED THIS MYSELF.
  • The Girls Guide to Scouting is a wonderful, fun way for your Girl Scout to learn about scouting and follow along with the patches we earn. It is NOT REQUIRED to purchase but your daughter will enjoy it.

Easiest Way to Get Geared Up: Roses and More on Greenville Avenue. Call ahead 214-361-6991 and then go to Roses and More Florist on Greenville Avenue next to Parkit Markit at 4724 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75206 . They have the full uniform and all the patches, pins, etc., you will need for your Girl Scout. AND they sew all of the items on for between $1.50 – $2.50 a patch.

Second Easiest Way: Go online and order the Starter kit for your Girl Scout. These kits include a backpack, all the required badges and pins and uniform for your daughter. It also includes the Girls Guide to Scouting book for your daughter. These kits range from $50.00 – $60.00.https://www.girlscoutshop.com/GIRLS/UNIFORMS/STARTER-KITS

Snack

  • We ask that parents volunteer to bring snack for the troop 1 time during the year. We will have a sign up sheet online that we will provide a link to.
  • Depending on how many Scouts we have this year, it is possible we can buddy up with another parent.
  • Snacks should be healthy and try to follow the food suggestions provided by WRM. Fruit, cheese, crackers, popcorn, veggies and dip, healthy muffins or bars are some examples of potential snacks. No cookies, cupcakes or sugar-laden foods, please. Drinks are not required but are welcome if they are self contained.
  • If you have questions or concerns, please contact either of the leaders to discuss!

 


Camp Out Info

  • All camp outs are completely voluntary.
  • Parents are welcome to attend with their child. The cost is per person attending.
  • We expect to have two camp outs this year, One will be an overnight with other Girl Scout troops at the Perot or Texas Rangers Stadium or the Girl Scout STEM Center. Details will follow.
  • We expect to have a family camp out in conjunction with the Navigators group with a tentative date of the weekend of May 1st. It will be at Camp Grady Spruce. (Air conditioned cabins.) http://campgradyspruce.org/cabin-rentals/ Price is estimated to be $100.00 per person with a deposit due 9/25. Full payment will be due in January and will be non-refundable. More information will be available soon.
